ABOUT iCAN BIKE CAMP
Unlimited Possibilities is partnering with iCan Shine to host the 2024 iCan Bike Camp at the Rinks in Irvine! The mission of iCan Bike Camp is to provide unique learning opportunities in recreational activities for people with disabilities. Each person’s abilities are embraced and nurtured to foster an environment where everyone can shine!
VOLUNTEER INFORMATION
iCan Bike Camp is a rewarding experience for all! Each rider attends the same 75-minute session for each of the 5 days (M – F) and is assigned the same two volunteers who will work with the rider throughout the week. It is important for our riders to work with the same volunteers each day, building a trusting relationship as they progress through the week.
Volunteers spend the whole week with the same rider to celebrate their hard work.
DETAILS & REQUIREMENTS
- -No prior experience working with people with disabilities is necessary.
- -Must be at least 15 years old.
- -You will be assigned to a rider once you arrive at camp. We will not know the speed of each rider until they start.
Volunteer spotters will walk/jog approximately 3 miles during each 75-minute session so please keep this in mind if considering volunteering for multiple sessions. Unless you are very athletic, please do not volunteer for more than two (2) 75-minute sessions per day.
Volunteers are required to attend a 45-minute orientation on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at 2:00pm at The Rinks. During this orientation, you will learn about how the iCan Bike program operates, what to expect each day in your role as a volunteer spotter and you will receive training tips on spotting your assigned rider. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and meet other volunteers in your session.
Volunteers arrive each day of camp 20 minutes prior to their session start time for a daily strategy/briefing session.

RIDER INFORMATION
BENEFITS FOR RIDERS
- -Increase in self-esteem and confidence spills over into many other aspects of their lives
- -Positive changes in family dynamics (family-based recreational opportunities)
- -Inclusion opportunities
- -Independent transportation
- -Improves physical fitness, mental health and overall quality of life
iCan Bike Camp works! The success rate of riders independently riding a two-wheel bicycle by the end of our iCan Bike program is approximately 80% and all riders progress and gain skills during the week. Even the 20% of riders that are not completely independent riders by the end of camp make tremendous progress towards that goal. These riders often become independent riders following camp with the help of parents and siblings who we train on the last day of camp on how to spot.
